May 2024 - A Journey through Islamic Art at IAMM

Our Journey was through 2 combined Exhibitions consisting of over 150 artefacts, contemporary paintings, and sculptures.

It ranged from historical artefacts from Islamic dynasties produced around  the globe to outstanding modern calligraphic art works.

Highlights of the diverse collection as informed by the Museum included:

1.A Quran from the Qing Dynasty of China 17th Century AD.

2. A Gold Filial from the throne of Tipu Sultan Mysore, Deccan 18th Century AD.

3. Oil on Canvas titled ALIF by Omar El Nagdi 1961.

The four basic components of Islamic Art ornament are calligraphy, vegetal patterns, geometric patterns, and figural representation.

These components were all present across the various works of art and artifacts exhibited. They sometimes overlapped, such as were seen in the contemporary art which embraced calligraphy in various eye pleasing forms.

The showstoppers in the eyes of this beholder (the interpretations and recollections of some may vary) were delights found in the ancient jewellery items and notably seen in:

1.Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace.
2.Ruby Necklace with gemstones sourced from Afghanistan that had inscriptions of the names of previous rulers.

With so much diversity and expertise to explore it took all of the designated two hours to enjoy a wonderful cultural experience.
