A group of 16 Enakkers really enjoyed their visit to this restaurant in Salak Selatan on Thursday 13 October. Sek Me Choy is the name of the owner who was a tin miner but in 1986 when the world price of tin fell suddenly he was forced to let go of his tin mines and started the restaurant as a social place for he and his friends to meet. His daughter Georgie spoke to us about her father and the tin mining process. There is even a model of the type of tin mining he carried out in the back of the restaurant.
We started with their famous pepper Bak Kut Teh soup which has had a history of more than 20 years, as it is one of the first shops in the whole of Malaysia to start making Pepper Bak Kut Teh. Apparently the heat from the pepper is very good for tin miners’ health as they always work with water and in wet environments. In 2006, it was chosen as one of the “Top 20 National Kings of Bak Kut Teh”.
Another signature dish was the salted baked chicken which takes 2 hours to prepare and is stuffed with an egg in both “ends” of the chicken to retain the moisture and served with copious amounts of ginger. We also had steamed grouper with ginger, vegetarian rice and two types of vegetables. Another highlight was a type of pork hamburger, pork belly in sweet sauce which you stuffed into fresh doughy pockets and ate with your hands. Last but not least was a delicious dessert of yam stuffed into a pumpkin shell with crunchy pork bits and nuts and cherries on top. Yum!
