Enak!, Thursday, May 10th 2018
I can say it was certainly a most exciting Enak! at a most exciting time here in Malaysia. The May Enak! was the day after GE14, Malaysia’s much contested polls on Wed May 9. It wasn’t without some anxiety that our fabulous hosts Pamela de Lange-Storck and Jeanne Greer (after efforts in changing the date didn’t work) that they decided to go ahead with plans for their Enak! on the scheduled date.
They were prepared to cancel if the numbers of attendees dwindled. As it turned out, all went well on Polling Day and a sizeable group of 16 Enakkers and one guest showed up at Restaurant Nam Heong Chicken Rice, Desa Sri Hartamas. Kudos to our hosts Jeanne and Pamela for their positivity, flexibility and patience.
They remained calm throughout and planned a most delicious Chicken Rice and pork lunch spread, with fish ball soup included. They had pre-selected and arranged the menu for Rm30 each. There was also an optional menu for vegetarians. Just very sorry our Muslim Enakkers couldn’t join us this time.
The Nam Heong Story:
Nam Heong Chicken Rice’s has a rich history. About 80 years ago in 1938, three immigrants from Hainan, China, started a coffee shop selling Hainanese Coffee, Toast and Eggs. At a later stage, Hainanese Chicken Rice was introduced as an additional dish for the customers. It turned out the Hainanese Chicken Rice received a very positive response and the owners accepted the fact that their Chicken Rice was more popular than toast and eggs. As time went by, new dishes were added to the menu to the delight of the customers. Fads come and go, but Nam Heong is still running at full force to the delight of all Nam Heong Chicken Rice regulars and new fans.
