October 2024 - Brotherless Night

On Friday, October 25th, twelve members of Book Group 2 gathered at Mori Kohi to discuss “Brotherless Night” by V. V. Ganeshananthan.

The book follows a young Tamil girl named Sashi growing up during the Sri Lankan civil war.  Sashi is sixteen years old and wants to become a doctor.  Her life starts to change dramatically due to death of her oldest brother, Niranjan, as the conflict begins.  The loss is traumatic for Sashi and her family.  As the conflict continues between 1983 and 2009, Sashi is exposed to frequent changes and sacrifices caused by violence and political disagreements.  Her story is of resilience, bonds formed and broken during difficult times, and the harsh realities of war.

All in all, the members engaged in a lovely conversation filled with personal experiences and family history relating to Sashi’s vivid and captivating journey.  The book group members gave the book a favorable rating of 8 of 10.
