On 27th February 2025, a ketupat weaving workshop was organised by Explorers Out and About.   

Hosted by fellow Explorer, Intan Zaihana, the workshop was conducted by Mazni Zainal whose ketupat weaving skills were handed down from her grandmother and mother.  A total of 16 members attended the workshop.

It was a challenging class but we all managed to successfully create a ketupat nasi masterpiece to take home.    

The story of this rice pouch begins in Java, Indonesia, where it’s believed to have originated centuries ago. It then spread through trade and cultural exchange to Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and other neighbouring regions.

While it is heavily linked to the celebration of Eid, there is evidence that the weaving of the leaves has pre-islamic origins.

It has various names such as “Kupat” – in Javanese and Sundanese, “Tipat” – in Balinese, Patupat or Filipino puso – in The Philippines.

Ketupat isn’t just a food; it’s a symbol. The intricate weave pattern using young coconut leaves (janur), represents the complexities of life, and the cooked rice inside symbolizes purity and forgiveness.  

In Malaysia, ketupat is an essential part of the Eid feast. It’s often served with rendang, serunding, peanut sauce or simply enjoyed on its own. Having ketupat at the table signifies unity, gratitude, and the spirit of togetherness.  The act of preparing and sharing ketupat strengthens family bonds and community ties.

Ketupat is also used in other celebrations, and in some areas, it is used as a daily food item.  In Bali, Indonesia, ketupat is also used in Hindu ceremonies.

There are numerous variations in ketupat weaving, depending on the region and purpose. Some are larger, some are more intricate, and some are designed for specific types of fillings.

  • The ketupat nasi (rice) has a square like shape
  • The ketupat satay has a diamond like shape 
  • The ketupat bawang has an onion (bawang) like shape.
