Pot-Luck 14th November 2024

We’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to Terrance Perera and Carin Andersson, both for hosting a wonderful event and for writing this review. We really appreciate your generosity in opening your home to us all and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Many thanks from all of us.

This year we decided to host the Enak! Annual Potluck in our community hall in Suria Stonor. We felt we could provide everyone with a comfortable and safe setting to meet and enjoy themselves. Volunteers like Enak! team co-convener Corinne, and other Enak members Angela, Keats, Trish, Katherine, and Phaik Luan came as early as 9 or 10 am to help set up the area and greet our guests. Joni and Pat Chia helped those arriving by the lift on the first floor and Jayathi, Joni, and Santhi met guests at the entrance and took them up via the lifts. Terrance and I helped wherever needed, especially coordinating with our security staff and taking guests up via the lifts. Michelle and Mei Leng were there to do the collection of RM20 per person. Rosemary, Lai Meng, Joni and Terence took photos. Siew Yen, Christine Siew, Angela, Phaik Luan, and many others stayed back to help with the cleanup. We had in total 40 people show up for the pot luck and there were 6 long tables filled with food and drinks and 6 tables for seating; there was an amazing selection of food from all over the world.

Here are some of the items we had that day, for drinks we had coffee, tea, soft drinks, and iced tea as well as Tunisian mint tea. Emna brought an entire Tunisian meal including a main course and a dessert. The appetizers were Tunisian grilled salad, American Bacon and cheese puffs, Vietnamese paper wraps, Indonesian lumpia, Malaysian curry puffs, mango salad, serunding daging, and braised peanuts.

The international main courses included Belgian beef carbonnade, Filipino beef salpicao, Chicken in tarragon sauce, Tunisian couscous, Bangladeshi chicken biryani, Inari-sushi, Chicken enchiladas, and vegetarian coconut chickpeas. The local mains included Laksam, Jicama, and cuttlefish in lettuce wraps, Spicy chicken masala, Curry chicken, vegetarian fried mee hoon, Nasi goreng, Hokkien Noodles, and Mutton curry.

The dessert section included American chocolate chip cookies, Pavlova, Watalappan, Kue pukis, Tunisian makroudh, and cupcakes.

The local dessert section was just as impressive with Tapioca cakes, Cucur udang with peanut sauce, Punjabi besan halwa, Coconut layered agar-agar, Sago pudding with gula Melaka, Muruku and Tapioca pudding.

This is what Rosemary had to say about the event: “There were great selections of Malaysian & International dishes which spread from Malaysia’s Kelantan to as far as Tunisia, Mexico, the Philippines, Belgium, Australia & the USA…what a treat! There was so much camaraderie and new friendships made here. Always thoughtful & inclusive, there were vegetarian, ” no pork” and non-halal dishes. The Hosts Terrence & Caren as well as Corinne, and Santhi our Enak Convenors thought of everything…from special parking for folks who couldn’t walk far, offering special treats like decaf coffee & waiting at the doors for the last Enakers in case they couldn’t find the venue. Special thanks to the many volunteers who were at the venue from 10 am helping to set up not to mention staying back to clear up…You guys’ ROCK! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Emna Esseghir educated us on some Tunisian culture, organizing a little game for us, and gave out prizes to those who found the “hidden clove” in her Tunisian couscous. Before we ended the pot luck, we all gathered to take a group photo.

Terrence and I certainly enjoyed hosting the 2024 Enak Potluck.
